Volkanovski opens up for highly interesting next fight: ”Definitely paid his dues”

Alexander Volkanovski has no problem facing bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling next.

Sterling will defend his strap against Sean O’Malley in August, and a win can possibly get him a title shot at featherweight, if it comes to ”Volk”.

“If (Sterling) goes down there and takes out Sean, I think he’s definitely paid his dues,” Volkanovski said at the UFC media Wednesday.

“How many title defenses would that be? Three or four. There you go. I think so. He’s a big dude. But yeah, he’s got a tough fight ahead of him. But that’s another possible fight. There’s plenty of options.”

Alexander Volkanovski: ”Yair is very dangerous”

However, before a potential clash with Sterling, the champion first needs to get past featherweight interim champion Yair Rodriguez in Saturday’s UFC 290 main event.

“Yair is very dangerous, and it’s the biggest fight of his life,” Volkanovski said about the interim champ. “But I’m planning on having this belt for a very long time.”

Rodriguez, who won the interim belt at UFC 284 in February, claimed that he’s unpredictibility is what makes him a tough fight for the reigining champion.

“I don’t know if I’m the most dangerous or not, but I just think I’m the rival that can change styles, the rival that’s more unpredictable than the rest, the rival that’s going to be the most difficult to compete against,” Rodriguez said. “He won’t know if I’m coming out southpaw or orthodox, if I’m going to throw a submission, if I’m going to wrestle. It’s unknown.”
