MMA champ Angela Lee reveals 2017 car crash was suicide attempt

ONE Champion Angela Lee recently decided to opened up on her mental health struggles and her 2017 suicide attempt.

Inspired by her younger sister Victoria Lee, who took her own life at 18, the champion has decided to create Fightstory, a nonprofit organization for mental health work.

“Fightstory is dedicated to speaking one’s truth, inspiring hope, and building a community for those struggling with mental health,” Lee wrote in an article published Tuesday by The Players Tribune. “It was created to bring healing, awareness, acceptance, and support for those battling through their darkest times, and for their loved ones as well.”

Angela Lee: ”I wanted to escape”

Andrea Lee was 21 at the time she attempted suicide, coming off the first two defenses of her ONE Championship title.

The pressure of fighting and defending the belt became too much for the young champion.

“I broke. I didn’t care anymore,” Lee wrote. “I kept going back and forth with thoughts in my head. Talking myself in and out of possibilities. I wanted to escape. I told myself: I have to take myself out of this fight. And that’s when things got really bad.”

“I decided to get in my car and leave it up to fate to see what happens next.”

Lee drove her car over a cliff but survived with just a concussion. The suicide attempt was covered up as an accident, where the 21-year-old was said to fall asleep at the wheel.
