Back in 2018, lightweights Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje clashed in what became one of the absolute best fights of the year.

Now, MMA fans might get a sequel as Gaethje recently mentioned Poirier as a potential next opponent. ”The Diamond” seems up for the challenge.

“It’s a fight that makes me nervous,” Poirier told FanSided MMA. “When I hear a name and I get nervous, it’s motivation. Those are the kind of fights that – same thing with Chandler. When I heard Chandler’s name, when they called me with Michael Chandler, I was nervous, because I knew the danger of those kinds of fights, and that’s what motivates me. Same thing with Justin. If they do call me and he’s the name that they say, maybe it happens. We’ll see.”

Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje have similar paths in the UFC

In the fight back in 2018, Poirier finished Gaethje by fourth-round TKO after a violent back-and-forth battle.

After the bout both fighters have interestly enough gone very similar ways in the UFC.

Both are 6-2 since, with losses coming in title bouts against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles ”do Bronx” Oliveira.

Both men have also been interim champions since their fight in 2018.

Poirier defeated Max Holloway for the interim UFC lightweight title in April 2019, while Gaethje beat Tony Ferguson to win the interim lightweight belt in May 2020.
