European Championships day 1: Two Swedish fighters advances!

Today, the IMMAF European Championships started in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy. The tournament will take place between September 27 and Saturday October 1.

Sweden is represented by a strong National team featuring 13 competitors, including five female and eight male fighters. Check out the full Swedish squad here!

Great success for Benjamin Hajijan

The first Swedish fighter to compete in the tournaments was junior featherweight Benjamin Hajijan who faced Ori Sarusi from Israel.

The Swede put on a solid performance and secured the win via split decision. Hajijan will face Alexandre Rita from Portugal in the quarterfinals next. Great start for Team Sweden!

Tough loss for Aria Afrasiabi

In the second Swedish fight in the European Championships, lightweight Aria Afrasiabi, who trains at Fighter Centre, faced the tough Andrew Barrett from Ireland in the 16th-finals.

During the fight, Barret showed off his slick grappling, and in the end, the Irishman was able to win all three rounds.

Ratko Tomic cut badly

In the third Swedish fight, welterweight Ratko Tomic faced Bulgarian fighter Bozhidar Ivanov in the 16th-finals.

However, after two competitive rounds where both fighters found success on the feet, Tomic was unfortunately cut badly over the left eye. Before the third round, the doctor stopped the fight, and the Bulgarian was declared winner via TKO.

Robin Kohzadi wins in debut

In the lightweight 16th-finals, Swedish Robin Kohzadi made his debut in the National Team.

18-year-old Swede started the tournament in dominant fashion and was able to stop Marek Medovarski from Slovakia with a armbar submission in the third round. Kohzadi will face Radostin Georglev from Bulgaria in the eight-finals.
