Report: Israel Adesanya pleads guilty to ’drink-driving’ charge

Former two-time UFC champion Israel Adesanya has pled guilty to drinking and driving in New Zealand. The crime was commited just 21 days before his last UFC bout. The UFC superstar is expected to be sentenced on January 10 next year.

“I want to apologize to the community, my family and my team for the decision I made to get behind the wheel after drinking at dinner,” Adesanya said in a statement provided to the NZ Herald.

The 34-year-old former middleweight champion was charged with driving a car with 87 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. The country’s legal limit is 50 milligrams.

Israel Adesanya: ”It was wrong”

”The Last Stylenbender” is regretting sitting behind the wheel under the influence.

“I am disappointed with my decision to drive, It was wrong,” Adesanya said in the statement. “I know that people might follow me, and I want them to know I do not think this behavior is acceptable.”

In his last fight, at UFC 293 on September 10, he surprisingly lost his middleweight belt to challenger Sean Strickland after getting outfought over five rounds.

Israel Adesanya successfully made his debut against Rob Wilkinson on 11 February 2018, at UFC 221. After four more victories, he won the middleweight interim title against Kelvin Gastelum.

At UFC UFC 243 in October 2019, he unified the title after knocking out Robert Whittaker in the second round.
