Jonna Malmgren expects a medal in Paris: ”I dream of being the best in the world”

Wrestling is one of the Olympic sports where Sweden found most success over the decades. All in all, Swedish wrestlers have won 87 Olympic medals.

However, in 2024, the former stand-out wrestling nation can only win one medal as Jonna Malmgren will be Sweden’s sole wrestler to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

”My dream is to become the best wrestler in the world,” Malmgren recently told SVT Sport. ”I’m at the top of the rankings so if everything goes according to plan, I have a chance to win an Olympic medal. I have proved that I am on that level. A medal is on my mind.”

The 22-year-old Swede is already a highly decorated wrestler with numerous medals to her name. Last year, she won gold at the U23 European Championships. She’s also a two-time Swedish champion, two time gold medalist in the European Championships for seniors, and a junior World Champion.

However, despite her international success, the wrestling stand-out is still living on less than 10.000 SEK (880 Euro) the Swedish Olympic Committee gives her monthly as a financial support.

”I’m not in this for the money. I just love life as a wrestler. No money in the world can replace what I’ve experienced,” Malmgren said.
