Former interim UFC middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum has struggled with a bunch of tough losses in the past few years.
Since 2019, he is 2-5 in the UFC, and as he is relatively small for the weight class, many experts claimed that Gastelum could be much more successful in his former division welterweight.
Gastelum won his four first UFC fights in the 170 division, and now he’s going back with the intention to win the welterweight gold.
“I’m making an official announcement, an official drop down to 170,” Gastelum said in an announcement on social media. “Expect my next fight to be at 170. I’m going to get shredded, I hope, and I think I can make another title run at that weight class. I think I can make it.”

Kelvin Gastelum: “This is a second chance”
The 31-year-old decision to go down in weight is a result of getting older and wiser. In fact, Kelvin Gastelum thinks the step down to welterweight could be a renaissance in his UFC career.
“This is a rebirth. Before, I was young, I was stupid, undisciplined, but now that I’m older, a little bit more mature and smarter, hopefully. This has always been my weight class to go to, but it really just takes me to decide that I want to do it, and now I [have decided] that I’m going to do it,” Gastelum said.
Kelvin Gastelum has a professional record of 17-8-1.
