Back in June, Khamzat Chimaev was forced to pull out of his main event bout against former champion Robert Whittaker. After suffering severe health problems and spending time in the hospital, ”Borz” just couldn’t pursue the training.
”We were in training camp. First month month was very good,” Chimaev explained. ”The last three weeks my (immune system) goes down. I don’t know what happened.”
”All the guys eat the same food, only me gets sick. I was in the hospital a couple of days then came out and started to train again. The same thing happened again.”
Chimaev was very ill and spent time in the hospital where he was advised to stay off training for quite some time.
”The doctors said I had to be off from the gym. Not training, not doing nothing. I went home to the mountains.”
Khamzat changed team for UFC 308
In the Kaukasus mountains, Chimaev reset and started on a new path in his career. Here he trains in a gym for Olympic wrestlers, with a whole new team around him, including legendary wrestling coach Salim Nutsalkhanov.
”Back home in the mountains. Some fresh air gives you good energy,” Chimaev said. ”Before I was famous, everyone was quiet, nobody told me what to do. When I started to be famous and make money, everyone was stopping me; ’do this, do that’. Everyone tried to be coaches and that was hard. Now I choose what I want do, what I want to train. That gives you good energy.”
