Leading up to the 2024 Olympic Games, Frontkick will provide you with interviews with some of Sweden’s finest combat sports athletes competing in Paris. First up is veteran judoka Marcus Nyman, who will participate in his fourth Olympics.
With 15 years at the top, and the Olympic games in London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2021 on his resume, Marcus Nyman is one of Sweden’s most experienced combat sports athletes.
This summer’s Olympic Games will be the fourth and last for the veteran.
”I’m the first Swede to compete in four Olympic Games. It’s fun to have had a long career, and now I hope to get an Olympic medal,” Nyman tells Frontkick in an exclusive interview.
He was just 19 years old when had his international breakthrough at the European Championships back in 2010. Winning gold in the tournament put him up there with the world elite.
At 34, Nyman is one of the biggest old-timers in the game.
”I’ve got a lot of experience throughout the years. That’s my biggest advantage at this point when my body is not 25 anymore,” he laughs. ”I can still compete with the best. I hope to deliver a good performance.”
Nyman has a full-time job outside of judo, which gives him the financial security and stability that many Olympians lack.
With 15 years as a top athlete, the Swedish veteran has a secret recipe of keeping his motivation.
”After every Olympics I take two years off from the National Team. I competed in European leagues instead. That way I found motivation in time for the Olympic qualifications. It’s a bit unique, it’s not really the usual way to do things, but it works for me.”
How will you prepare for the weeks leading up to the Olympics?
”I will get in peak shape. We will go on a training camp in Spain next week. An Olympic camp where most athletes that will participate in Paris will be. There will be some good sparring there for sure. We competed against each other through two years of qualification, so we know each other pretty well by now.”
The Olympics are scheduled to take place from 26 July to 11 August in France. Frontkick will provide you with up-to-date results and interviews!
