Brutally honest Dustin Poirier: ”I’m at war with myself – that’s the truth”

Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski recently gave a heartbreaking post-fight press conference where he admitted he battled demons when he’s not in fight camp.

Former lightweight interim champion and UFC veteran Dustin Poirier knows exactly what Volkanovski talked about.

“I think every fighter who’s all in has some sort of that going on,” Poirier recently told MMA Mania. “I’ve been vocal and public about it that if I’m not at war with a fight or something, I’m at war with myself. That’s the truth. Hearing him say it reassures me that it’s not just me.”

The 34-year-old lightweight always wants to stay busy, whether it’s fighting or business.

”That’s the competitive nature, that’s our mindset with a lot of people and we need to be battling something. Like I said, if it’s not an opponent or a date or a business move, it’s myself. For me, in particular.”

”The Diamond” is known to be a busy fighter who always tested himself against the absolute best MMA fighters the world has ever produced. His impressive resume includes champions like Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway and Eddie Alvarez.

“Idle hands are a devil’s playground and you gotta stay busy and we gotta stay moving forward and working towards something,” Poireir claimed. “That downtime after fights where you don’t know what’s next, it gives your brain time to just wonder and overthink and that’s not good.”
