When Nate Diaz fought Conor McGregor at UFC 196 back in 2016, he got the biggest payday at that point of his career. However, if UFC got the way they wanted, he would only make around 1 million dollars for the fight, according to Diaz himself.

“They were trying to give me pennies for that too,” Diaz said in a recent interview. ”I was like, ‘Yeah, right. I know what I’m doing here. I’ve been through it.’ I’d already been into it with the organization about that. So they called me and they were like, ‘Hey, while you’re going to do this, we’re going to give you a million dollars.’ I was like, ‘Hey, you’re gonna give me more than that.’

“So I got like five times more than that because of that.”

”I knew what it was with the whole money in the business and shit. I might not be educated but I’m not stupid.”

Nate Diaz won the fight via submission

Daiz took the fight on short notice but it still turned out to be just as exciting as promised. In the second round, he gave McGregor his first loss in the UFC as he submitted him with a rear-naked-choke.

On top of his hefty purse, the Stockton fighter was awarded with the Fight of the Night bonus as well as the Performance of the Night bonus.
