The short-notice middleweight fight between undefeated Khamzat Chimaev and former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has been the talk of the town during the past couple of days.

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who competes in the short-notice lightweight main event, recently shared his thoughts on the bout.

”I think it’s going to end up being a standup fight,” Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel. ”I’ve never seen Usman in scrambles, he’s hard to take down, he’s good in those positions and he’s strong. Chimaev, he’s big, I know a lot of people say he fights at welterweight as well, but I think he’s more of a middleweight and Usman is a solid welterweight.”

Chimaev is known for his furious pace and wrestling in the opening round, but the featherweight king believed that it might be hard for Usman to weather the storm.

”I think he still has to handle that… can Usman handle the shots? I think he can. The pace? Everything has to be 100%,” Volkanovski said. ”I think the pace that Chimaev is going to set is going to be hard to deal with for someone on short notice.”

Kamaru Usman himself recently opened up on the short notice fight at UFC 294.

“He’s very skilled. He’s strong, he’s big. He’s fast, he can wrestle, he can grapple, he can strike. He has everything,” Usman said. “But so do I. At the end of the day, we’re all human beings. Everyone feels invincible until someone pokes that balloon.”
