Julianna Pena shoots down the flygweight division: “Best fights are at 135”

Ahead of her first bantamweight title defense, champion Julianna Pena made a case that bantamweight is the deepest of all women’s divisions in the UFC. She even took the chance to shoot down dominant flyweight champion, and former rival, Valentina Shevchenko to make her point.

“They had to create a whole other division at 125 because Valentina couldn’t beat Amanda two times, so then they went and cut weight and created a division for her to move down to 125. The real fights, the best fights are at 135,” Pena recently said in an interview Yahoo Sports!

“Now that I’ve become the champion, I’ve opened up the door to a whole list of girls that are gunning for a shot at me,” Pena said. “That is what I wanted.

Julianna Pena lost to Valentina Shevchenko in 2017

Shevchenko’s only UFC losses came to Amanda Nunes at bantamweight. Since the women’s flyweight division was created in 2017, “Bullet” has most definitely been its ruler, with no less than seven title defenses. All in all she has nine wins and no losses in the flyweight division.

Julianna Pena and Valentina Shevchenko fought in bantamweight back in January 2017. A fight that Pena lost via a second-round submission. Perhaps the “The Venezuelan Vixen” is now planting a seed for a bantamweight rematch against Valentina Shevchenko?
