Undisputed world champion Canelo is back: Fights in Mexico for the first time in 11 years

The reigning WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is going home to fight in Mexico for the first time in more than a decade.
On May 6, the undisputed champion puts his titles on the line when he faces John Ryder at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara. The fight will be a part of the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration.
“I feel really happy to be coming back in May, because following my surgery, I was unsure of when I’d be coming back. Returning to the ring and coming back to fight in Jalisco, where I’m from, makes me especially happy. And in John Ryder, I’m facing a very competitive fighter,” Canelo said in a statement.

Huge upset if Ryder beats Canelo
Last time the Mexican boxer fought in his native country was at Plaza de Toros, Mexico City, when he stopped Kermit Citron by fifth-round TKO in November 2011.
Since then, he has become one of the biggest stars in boxing, and in combat sports in general, winning multiple world championships in four weight classes from light middleweight to light heavyweight.
His British opponent, the 34-year-old John Ryder, would pull off an enormous upset if he could manage to defeat Canelo on Mexican soil. The British pugilist has a professional boxing record of 32-5, and currently rides a four-fight winning streak.
