In a new press release, the International Boxing Association, IBA, announced that they are bringing boxers of Russia and Belarus back to competitions again.

Read IBA:s full statement below:

”IBA Board of Directors voted in favor to cancel its previous decision and allow boxers of Russia and Belarus to compete at the IBA events with immediate effect. The IBA strongly believes that politics shouldn’t have any influence on sports. Hence, all athletes should be given equal conditions.

Respecting its own autonomy as the international sports federation, the IBA shall remain politically neutral and independent. IBA calls for peace and remains a peacemaker in any conflicts. Moreover, the IBA has obligation to ensure equal treatment towards the athletes and competition officials, regardless of their nationality and residence.

Both Russian and Belarus teams will be able to perform under their flags, and the national anthems will be played in case they win a gold medal. According to the decision, the technical officials of Russia and Belarus will also be back in the competitions.”

Swedish Boxing Federation disagree with IBA

According to Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, Per-Axel Sjöholm from the Swedish Boxing Federation (Svenska Boxningsförbundet) dislikes the decision.

”We’re standing in the other corner and will fight against this decision. We in Sweden will not accept this decision. I will not precede a board decision, but our boxers will not compete against boxers from Russia or Belarus in international competitions,” Sjöholm wrote to TT (translated from Swedish). ”Once again IBA show that they don’t care about democracy, and instead only do their own thing. We are not surprised, but now it’s time to find alternative ways to IBA’s way. Disgustion is a strong word, but that’s what I feel.”
