Matt Hughes is widely considered among the greatest fighters in the history of MMA. He was inducted in the UFC Hall of Fame back in 2010.
The former two-time UFC welterweight champion defended his strap a then-record seven times. During his career he defeated the best fighters in the sport such as B.J Penn, Georges St-Pierre, Royce Gracie and Sean Sherk.
In his last pro fight, back in September 2011, he suffered a first-round knockout by Josh Koscheck.
”I’m not retiring. I’m just going to tell the UFC to put me up on a shelf for a while, and we’ll see what happens after that,” Huges said after the fight.
The UFC announced the retirement of Hughes on January 24, 2013.
