With no fewer than three Mexican UFC champions in Alexa Grasso, Brandon Moreno and Yair Rodriguez, putting together UFC Mexico looks like the given thing for the MMA promotion.
Especially since all three champs fought in the first quarter of 2023, and therefore should be ready to defend their titles on the same night.
UFC president Dana White is aware that the Mexican market is hotter than it’s ever been, and admits that the company is currently dropping the ball.
“For the first time ever, we’ve got three champions (from Mexico),” White said at the UFC 287 post-fight press conference. “Why did we not do a ‘Cinco de Mayo’ fight (in Mexico)? Why did we not do this? Why? We’re fucking it up. That’s why. We’re fucking up.”
“We’re trying to fix it. We’re making a lot of mistakes right now, and I know we are. We’ll get our shit together, I promise you.”
UFC has not visited Mexico since September 2019 when all three champions Moreno, Grasso and Rodriguez happened to fight on the same card.
The event marked Grasso’s last fight in strawweight before moving up to her current weight class where she is undefeated.
The 29-year-old champion is currently riding a five-fight winning streak in the flyweight division, a streak that includes a bonus awarded stoppage win over former champion Valentina Shevchenko in March.
