Yesterday, Smilla “The Hurricane” Sundell lost her ONE Championship Muay Thai strawweight title as she missed the 125 lbs championship weight limit with 1,5 lbs.
In a recent comment, the Swede said she did her best to get on weight but ultimately her height of 173 centimeters is a big factor making strawweight.
“I’m really sad I didn’t make weight yesterday. I really did my best. I’m tall,” Sundell said at the ceremonial weigh-ins.
Natalya Diachkova accepted a 126.5 lb catchweight bout with the former champion and will take 30% of Sundell’s purse. Sundell claimed she would be up for a future rematch for the belt with Natalya Dyachkova.
“Yeah, maybe do a rematch in the future for the belt, but right now, I focus on this fight.”
In another recent interview, Sundell commented on missing weight and her desire to fight in a heavier weight class.
“Turning 20 this year. I signed the contract when I was 16. I have grown, yes. I put on some muscles and I think I grew even taller,” Sundell said.
Sundell defeated Jackie Buntan to win the inaugural ONE Women’s Strawweight Muay Thai World Title in April 2022. She defended her belt once against Allycia Rodrigues from Brazil.
Tonight, she will take on Diachkova in the main event of ONE Fight Night 22 on Prime Video. The bout will take place at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. Only the Russian can win the title.
