The boxing Tournament King of the Ring just took place in Borås, Sweden, with over 500 pugilists competing over three days. The tournament is one of the biggest amateur tournaments in the world.
Hammarby Boxning’s Majd Alsafadi, one of Sweden’s absolute most promising boxers right now, was voted as the prestigious ’People’s Champ’ after delivering highly entertaining boxing in his three bouts.
Talking exclusively to Frontkick, the young and promising boxer shares his thoughts on the weekend’s tournament and becoming the crowd’s favorite.
”It was with mixed emotions hearing that I became the People’s Champ, since my goal was to win the whole tournament. I had all the chances but my energy just wasn’t enough,” Alsafadi says.
After beating one British and one Swedish fighter, he faced Norway’s Adrian Hagen in the finals. The worn-out Swede fought a good fight but eventually lost the Scandinavian derby with 1-4 on the scorecards.
”I was ill at the beginning of the week but wanted to fight anyway. To reach the finals and perform well proves to me that it’s all about the right mentality. even though I was a bit sick,” Alsafadi says.
”A pretty big crowd cheering for the other guy”
Even though he might have lost the finals, the young fighter is still happy with his performances at King of the Ring.
”It felt great, I had three bouts, won two and lost one, but like I said, in the finals I just didn’t have enough energy due to the illness.”
Why do you think you became the King of the Ring people’s champion?
”After the semi finals the promoter came up and told me that I was one of the candidates to the belt. There was a pretty big crowd cheering for the other guy and the tempo was quite high. However, a lot of people came up to me afterwards and said they liked my performance,” Alsafadi says.
Swedish Championships next for Majd Alsafadi
Majd is one of the country’s most promising amateur boxers right now with numerous fights both in Sweden and abroad. Right now his eyes are set on the Swedish Championship and a gold medal to end the year in the best possible way.
”Next up I have a training camp with my club Hammarby Boxning in Germany. I look forward to get some good sparring done before the Swedish Championship in December”
