90-year-old Swede is the first Nordic woman to become a 7th degree black belt

Swedish Judo pioneer Solveig Malmkvist Bennerström, 90, becomes the first woman in the Nordic countries to become a seventh degree black belt.

”It feels unreal, she recently told the Swedish Radio.

The 90-year-old Swedish Judoka has been active in the sport for more than 60 years, and when she started back in 1962 she was the only woman in Sweden to practice the sport.

”I got very interested! It felt like coming home. It suited me, Malmkvist Bennerström said.

”Judo was completely new in Sweden and we had to learn ourselves in the beginning. We had a hard time getting trainers, but later we took in guest trainers from Japan and Holland.”

During the years she has been a frontrunner among women in Judo, and has also been passionate about Judo as a parasport.
