Aljamain Sterling ready to leave title and bantamweight division: ”99.9%”

This weekend UFC champion Aljamain Sterling may very well be competing in his final bantamweight bout.

Sterlings bantamweight title is on the line in the FUC 292 main event against top contender Sean O’Malley. While Sterling is a clear favourite O’Malleys unorthodox style does present some issues for any opponent.
Should Sterling win, he says he will leave the bantamweight division in favour of competing at featherweight.

”There’s a 99.9 percent chance this is my last fight at 135 [pounds], Sterling said during The MMA Hour. I win this for sure, I’m out of here. Done. It’s Merab [Dvalishvili’s] time. The second part of that is, I’m a little bit over weight, this much weight.”

Alexander Volkanovski vs Aljamain Sterling?

Sterling is very close with top-ranked bantamweight Merab Dvalishvili – who is currently on the doorstep of a title shot. The two have made it expressly clear that they will never fight, though, which creates some issues at the top of the division.

Meanwhile featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is in need of fresh contenders. While he is expected to face undefeated Ilia Topuria there’s hardly a slew of contenders for the throne.

Volkanovski vs Sterling is one of the biggest potential bouts that could be booked in the lighter weight divisions, but fans will have to wait until the UFC 292 main event to see what the future of the division looks like.
