After the highly anticipated fight with Conor McGregor fell through, Michael Chandler seems to have his eyes set for the next big target; the UFC lightweight title.
In a series of Tweets, he claimed that his wrestling his better than reigning lightweight champion Islam Makhachev’s sambo.
“Good old fashioned passionate American [Missouri wrestling] beats sambo all day [Islam Makhachev].”
“I’ve been [targeting) your ass for 8 years…good, old-fashioned, passionate [Missouri wrestling) beats Dagestani sambo every day of the week [Islam Makhachev].”
“I don’t get taken down in the open, I don’t get taken down on the cage…I don’t get taken down, period.”
However, it seems like Makhachev won’t give Chandler a chance to fight for the strap.
“You are unreliable dude, one tweet from your master, and you’ll run away. Champ needs real opponent,” Makhachev responded on social media.
The champion has been rumoured to face Armand Tsarukyan in a title defense this fall. However, Tsarukyan is facing a nine month suspension for attacking a fan at UFC 300.
Makhachev comes from a highly interesting clash with lightweight fan-favorite Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier in June. He won the fight via a brabo choke in the fifth round.
Chandler has not competed since November 2022 when he lost to Poirier at UFC 281. The former Bellator champion is 2-3 in the UFC. At the moment there are no word if he will face McGregor this fall.
