Undefeated Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov failed a drug test prior to his Bellator 300 fight against Brent Primus on October 7. He’s now facing multiple repercussions.
The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has suspended the champion after a October 6 drug test which indicated the presence of an undisclosed prohibited substance.
“Respondent provided evidence that the prohibited substance was prescribed to him by a physician and maintains that the prohibited substance was prescribed for therapeutic use,” the commission document states.
Nurmagomedov faced Primus in the main event of Bellator 300 event on October 7. After five dominant rounds, he stood as the winner via unanimous with 50-45 on the judges scorecards. The results are now overruled.
Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz commentet on the situation in a statement sent to MMA Fighting.
“Usman was prescribed medication for an illness he had. It’s not an anabolic steroid, EPO, HGH, etc. Nothing enhancing. He will rematch Primus and get back in the tournament,” Abdelaziz said.
Usman Nurmagomedov is the cousin of undefeated former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
