On Wednesday, The Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC ) suspended Swedish heavyweight Ilir Latifi for three months after he fought with a possible staph infection against Aleksei Oleinik at UFC Vegas 61 in October. He will also have to pay legal fees for the commission’s process, but gets to keep his full purse.
In the UFC Vegas 61 post-fight interview, Latifi revealed that he competed with a swollen leg and fever.
NAC later claimed that Latifi did not inform the promotion or commission of his staph infection before talking about it in the interview. The commission said that the “behavior cannot be tolerated.”
NAC commissioners declared the suspension of Latifi a precedent for similar issues in the future.
At UFC Vegas 61, Ilir Latifi put on a solid performance against heavyweight veteran Oleinik, and won the bout with 30-27 on all three judges’ scorecards.
In the post-fight interview, ”Sledgehammer” said that the fight could potentially be his last in the octagon.
“This was my last fight on my contract. You know, I turn 40 now, and I don’t know what will happen after this. I want to say special thanks to the UFC, it’s been an amazing run.” Latifi said. “We see what happens after this.”
