Heavyweight superstar Tyson Fury retired earlier this year, but will be back in the ring on Saturday to take on Derek Chisora for a third time.

Recently speaking to Ariel Helwani at The MMA Hour, an honest Fury opened up on the difficulties to retire and why he decided to return.

“I need it mentally, physically and emotionally. I’m not ready to let it go right now,” Fury said. “I’m only 34 so there’s still plenty left in the tank.”

The British boxer compared life as retired to the feeling when you can’t breathe.

“It’s a very difficult thing to let go. I don’t know what to do. Yeah, when the music stops and the doors are closed, and there’s nothing else and realisation hits you, that you’re retired and you’re finished. It was like someone put me in a room and sunk all the oxygen out of it and I was fighting for survival.”

Tyson Fury: “I never wanted all the fame”

Seven years ago, Tyson Fury won the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight titles as he defeated Wladimir Klitschko via unanimous decision in Germany. However, the life-changing moment of becoming the heavyweight champion seemed to haunt him ever since.

“I think it was a shit night to be honest. I think it was like a curse, it’s been a pretty shitty seven years since,” Fury said. “It’s almost been a curse beating Wladimir Klitschko.”

“Three of those seven years were shitty, dark and horrible, suicidal. And the two of them were out to covid, and then the other two were active and good.”

Life as a champion is not as good as one might think, according to the superstar.

“I never wanted all the fame and all the shit that comes with being a champion. I got everything I ever wanted by beating Klitschko, just getting that victory over him,” Fury said.

“It takes over your life, you don’t own your own life anymore. You can’t go anywhere, you can’t live a normal life, so it’s not what I wanted and it’s not a great life. It sucks dick. You don’t have your own life anymore. I’m stuck where I have to be tortured by people wherever I go. I can’t go out with my family, I can’t be a normal guy anymore.”
