Ruiz knocked down his 43-year-old opponent three times during the fight, twice in the second round and once in round seven. With the win he took a major step towards a chance to become world champion again.
After the fight, Ruiz gave credit to his veteran opponent Luis Ortiz.
“I worked so hard for this fight, because I knew he’s a warrior and he hits hard. I thought I did a beautiful job handling his pressure and also coming forward,” Ruiz said.

Andy Ruiz shocked the world in 2019
The hard-hitting Mexican became world champion in 2019 after defeating Anthony Joshua to win the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO titles. He was the first male boxer of Mexican heritage to win a world heavyweight championship. However, he lost the title in the rematch against Joshua just a few months later.
Now he wants nothing more than to become the champion of the world again.
“I do not want to be waiting,” Andy Ruiz said. “I want to fight at least three or four times a year. I’m hungry, man. I want to be a champion again.”
